LCIF Responds to Earthquake in Italy

OAK BROOK, IL USA, April 6, 2009 – More than 100,000 people are homeless and 270 dead following the devastating earthquake centered in the medieval city of L’Anquila, Italy the morning of April 6. The 6.3-magnitude quake occurred 60 miles northeast of Rome. In all, 26 towns and villages were damaged.

Lions in Italy collected over 2,000 blankets requested by the authorities of Civil Protection and of those 400 were donated by Lions Club Poggio a Caiano-Carmignano Medicei in Tuscany. Lions donated 300 pairs of shoes and distributed over 500 kits with soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc. They purchased goods and materials through manufacturers or wholesalers with LCIF Emergency Grant funding and by our District funds. In the spirit of Easter, Lions of District 108-AB donated 1,000 chocolate eggs which were distributed to children in the camps in Piazza d'Armi and Coppito.

LCIF will continue to work with Lions to assess immediate and long-term needs.
