Lions Clubs International Foundation is in contact with Lions in Haiti as well as neighboring Latin American countries. Lions leaders and LCIF staff are working with local Lions on long-term reconstruction plans.
Immacula Simeon is a grandmother. She currently lives with seven members of her family in a tent donated by the Lions.
"The day of the earthquake, I was making food as usual at the center since I am a cook. The center fell in. I dislocated my right arm, but my life was saved. After, it was terrible! I lost a child who worked in the same place as me, in another room. Our house was not destroyed but it was not functional since another house fell on top of it, making access impossible. We still have not been able to evaluate the damage. We arrived at camp Saeh. We were sleeping under sheets which were protecting us from the sun and the wind. We didn’t have much money, no food and no water. It was very hard. And then the Lions Clubs arrived and everything changed. They helped us regain our hope. My last grandson was born on February 12th, 2010, one month after the earthquake. His mother took a bad fall during the event but luckily she is ok and the child is doing great."
Mr. Yves Pheterson Georges is the director of the Institution for mixed classic studies, from kindergarten to the eighth grade (77 children between 3 and 11, or sometimes older). His wife Anite Pourcely, a business woman, and his mother who barely escaped the earthquake by leaving the house as it fell in.
"Before the quake, I was living in my own place and my wife was living at her place of work. There were 12 of us in the house, which is an addition to the school. The house was completely destroyed and we had no more income. My wife’s business was destroyed as well at Alazar Bar. We each took care of three children and our parents. Since the quake we have been living on our savings, which are running out.
I have regained my confidence in the future ever since the Lions Clubs became the official sponsor of the Saeh Park. You couldn’t imagine what a difference it makes! Life itself has changed, as well as the conditions of the small community and the hope that tomorrow will be better. Before, our small community lived on the very ground, without improvised tents in fabric or plastic and the leaders and I were hopeless since we had nothing here to really help.
Thanks to the Lions Clubs we had the material and moral support to help organize the camp. Hope has come back for the needy in the community and for others, actors in the community and members of the coordination committee of the camp since we have something concrete to say and to bring to the community. All our thanks to the
Lions!"
Samuel Dumany, 10 years old
"I was at school in fourth grade before the quake and I lived with my mother Ina Jean Baptiste, and my step father Paul November, and my two brothers and two sisters.
On the day of the earthquake, I was injured in the face by a wall which was falling and a part of a pole fell on my leg. There was lots of blood. I was in a lot of pain and very scared. I had several stitches and after attending to my broken right leg they put a cast on at the hospital.
Our house was destroyed. We arrived at camp Saeh. Before receiving the blue tent from Lions, I was with my family under plastic and pieces of fabric.
I would like to be a Leo Club member."
