Long-Term Plans

The Lions of Haiti have formed a committee of Lions leaders for Haiti, Dominican Republic and neighboring countries to oversee the reconstruction efforts.

While not confirmed, the proposal to move forward with 600 transitional homes will go before the Executive Committee for approval the end of July 2010.  This transitional housing allows homes to be built on the existing slab, where their home had originally been standing - avoiding any property issues.

The following initiatives are being considered by the Haitian Lions Committee at the moment.  As you will see, meetings are currently being conducted to assess the eye care status in the Port-au-Prince area.

  • Six hundred Haitian families are moving into new, temporary homes thanks to an initiative between LCIF, the Lions of MD111 Germany and HELP, an international non-governmental organization. This the first of many reconstruction rpojects to receive support from LCIF thanks to generous financial support of Lions worldwide following the devastating earthquake. Through the project, transitional homes will be erected directly on a family's plot of land, thus avoiding the hardship of further displacement.
  • LCIF staff and the Haitian Lions participated in a meeting in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, May 16-19th, where the recent assessment of eye care services in Port au Prince and the surrounding area were discussed and plans for future eye health work in Haiti are being developed.
  • The Haitian Lions are operating a house that provides short term housing for skilled medical volunteers from abroad who are working in Port au Prince.  Currently volunteer doctors from  Humani Terra are staying there while in Haiti to provide free surgery to burn and trauma patients.
  • The Haitian Lions and LCIF are exploring other long-term projects such as the reconstruction of homes, schools and medical facilities.
