Lions international assistance programs include:

Lions Helping Lions: the Interclub Program

Lions clubs in developing countries are faced with challenges far beyond their resources.  Materials to meet overwhelming human needs are often unavailable.  Time and again, Lions in developed countries, however, can help.

Books, magazines, used eyeglasses, medicines, vaccines, instruments, medical, dental equipment, radios for educational programs, school construction and supplies are but a few of the contributions made by Lions.

Clubs from some areas of the world actively participate in a variety of international assistance projects.  Contributions from the Lions of Denmark, for example, made possible vocational rehabilitation programs, agricultural production and academic education in India. Swedish Lions provided educational funding for students in Africa.  In each case of giving and receiving, the clubs or districts worked through a Lions coordinator.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) Core 4 and IAG (International Assistance Grant) programs may be especially relevant for international projects.

Lions clubs can assist other clubs that are seeking items or assistance (such as basic medical supplies, a fire truck, or scholarship funds) through the Interclub Program. Clubs that are seeking educational, material, medical, or vocational assistance should contact their district governor for approval.

The club should then submit their district governor's name and basic Interclub information (club name, name of club contact including address and/or e-mail address, and type of assistance) to the Program Development Department at international headquarters. Requests and offers will appear online for one year.

Guidelines for Partnering with Another Club

A.  Purpose

To provide assistance to clubs in areas where need exceeds available assistance, thereby encouraging two or more clubs to cooperate in serving a community.

Interclub is intended to promote international understanding in local communities and amongst club members. Interclub also provides clubs with the opportunity to raise funds for Lion-to-Lion projects.

B. Recipients

The club providing the assistance will choose one or more projects and will determine an amount and a definite time limit for completion of the project.

  • Short range - needy persons, groups, villages, schools, or organizations eligible for assistance as determined by the local Lions club;

  • Long range - those for whom assistance over a long-period of time will result in self-sufficiency.

C. Methods

The club requesting/receiving the assistance shall provide a proposal of the project, including, but not limited to: a description, background information, rough calculations, and a timeline for project completion.

Participation by all clubs involved may be 50-50% or any variation thereof. All clubs involved must accept the cooperation for a defined period of time, after which, the agreement can be renewed or cancelled.

Full information shall be provided in the initial phase, execution, and final completion of the project. Practical problems such as bank transfers and import restrictions shall be examined and agreed upon before sending funds and/or materials.

D. Practical Goals

  • Normally, one cooperative project should be carried out each year (valued at US$500-2000 or its equivalent).

  • Such practical activities on a small scale are very effective in promoting international understanding among club members and the public. The club international relations committee must provide information for the club bulletin, club meetings, and local press. The club should also consider initiating exhibitions, lectures, etc. to inform the public.
