UN Global Compact and Lions Clubs International Establish Cooperation
NEW YORK, March 14, 2008 – The UN Global Compact and Lions Clubs International announced today a new collaboration between the two organizations. The agreement was signed by Mahendra Amarasuriya, President, Lions Clubs International (LCI), and Soren Petersen, Head, Global Compact Local Networks and Partnerships, during the 30th Annual Lions Day with the UN at UN Headquarters.
The UN Global Compact and LCI agreed to promote joint cooperation in developing countries between local Lions clubs and Global Compact Local Networks in order to harness the power of business in responding to the challenges and opportunities of globalization, in particular with regard to the UN Millennium Development Goals.
“For the fiscal year 2008-09, at least three pilot projects are planned in Latin America, Africa, and South/Southeast Asia,” Amarasuriya said during the signing ceremony. Petersen emphasized the potential synergy effects between local Lions clubs and Global Compact Local Networks as “both organizations are based on a similar set of universal values and similar views on the role of corporate citizenship.”
The UN Global Compact currently includes almost 5,000 companies and other stakeholders from approximately 120 countries that are working to advance universal principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the environment and anti-corruption and to engage in actions in support of broader UN goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals. Global Compact Local Networks have been established in close to 70 countries.
Lions Clubs International is a worldwide voluntary service organization of 1.35 million members with clubs in 206 countries, whose mission is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote international understanding among all peoples of the world. LCI, a consultative member with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, has a long history of positive relations with the UN.
