LCIF Donates to UNICEF School-in-a-Box Program

NEW YORK, New York, USA, July 22, 2010 – To continue Lions’ support of the School-in-a-Box program, a donation of US$39,468.62 was presented to UNICEF. Past International President Al Brandel and Past International Director and UNICEF Representative Bob Klein presented the check on behalf of Lions during an official ceremony at UNICEF’s offices in New York. The funds represent designated donations made by Lions and other donors to LCIF over the last year to support this program.

In 1996, Lions Clubs International signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNICEF to support the School-in-a-Box program.

Lions Clubs International Foundation has provided over US$200,000 in funding support for the School-in-a-Box program, meaning that Lions have supported nearly 900 School-in-a-Box kits.  Currently, each kits costs approximately US$257. Recent recipient countries include: Chad, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Mali, Pakistan, Uganda and other areas around the world.

UNICEF School-in-a-Box kits ensure the continuation of children's education in the first 72 hours of an emergency and provide them with a lifeline back to normality, the security of a steady routine and a chance to express themselves. Each kit contains essential classroom supplies for a teacher and up to 40 students. Teachers can also use the inside cover of the box as a chalkboard.

After Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, UNICEF and its partner agencies, including Lions Clubs International, delivered more than 2,000 kits to the region, helping 160,000 children.

Lions Clubs International Foundation is the charitable arm of Lions Clubs International, the largest service club organization in the world with 1.35 million members in 206 geographic areas and countries. The Foundation provides grant funding to Lions clubs worldwide to support vital humanitarian services. LCIF was ranked by a Financial Times' study as the number one non-governmental organization with which to partner. Learn more at
