White Cane Safety Day

Increasing Awareness of the "Symbol of Independence"

Blind and visually impaired people in many countries use the familiar white cane with a red band at the bottom. Lions help increase awareness of this "symbol of independence" – and the laws governing its use – during international white cane events. 

White Cane Safety Day and International Events

White cane events take place worldwide on the following designated dates:

• USA Events: October 15 is "National White Cane Safety Day." The third week in May is "White Cane Week."

• International Event: October 15 is "International White Cane Safety Day."

• Canadian Event: The first week in February is "White Cane Week."

During these events, Lions help to educate the public about the aspirations, hopes and abilities of people who are blind or visually impaired.
