Did you know that 1 in 4 people of reading age are illiterate? This month, International President Wayne Madden is launching a global service campaign, the Lions Reading Action Program to focus on increasing literacy and access to learning resources. Throughout this year of service, clubs around the world are encouraged to organize projects that promote reading and education. To get started, review the list of potential partners to collaborate with and download the project planning guide.
World of Service Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of Leo and Lion service in eight categories. One fun new category is the “Best Reading Action Program Rap Video.” So, Lions and/or Leos put your rhyming skills to the test and create your own rap music video on how to get children to read. Videos should be no longer than two minutes in length. Read the nomination form to find out how to enter.
As the world’s leading service club organization, Lions have many significant accomplishments. Local and global initiatives to strengthen communities take place daily, many focused on sight, youth and response following a disaster. Now, Lions are helping eliminate measles, a disease that kills hundreds of children each day. LCIF is pleased to recognize generous clubs with a newly designed banner patch. Clubs that donate an average of US$50, US$100 or US$250 and above per member will receive a corresponding One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative patch. Membership is based as of January 1, 2012.
July 2012 launches a new season of LQ, Lions Quarterly video magazine. In this edition, watch as Lions journey to Honduras for a comprehensive sight mission; put children first by offering a free pre-school program in Virginia, USA; rebuild a fishing village following a devastating Tsunami in India; and learn how one club in Texas, USA is using social media to generate exposure of its club activities and engage volunteers. Also, look at how Lions are making an impact through the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative and are celebrating 25 years of encouraging peace. Share LQ with your club members, project partners and community members. The video is available on Lions News Network (LNN), YouTube and to download from iTunes.
A new Leo video, “Leading for Life”, debuted during the first-ever Leo Lion Summit in Busan, Korea. This inspiring video looks at the leadership, experience and opportunities available to young people through Leo clubs. Alpha and Omega Leo clubs provide youth volunteer opportunities, and are also a place to grow and have fun. “Leading for Life” illustrates the Leo spirit of serving others and the important partnership with Lions, leading to a path of lifelong service.
