In our January issue, you'll see how the Lions-Measles Initiative is protecting 41 million children in Africa, learn about the new Lions International Essay Contest, find out about our 2010-2011 Peace Poster Contest theme and more. Read on for the latest Lions Clubs International news and information.

Lions-Measles Initiative Program to Protect 41 Million Kids

Measles Initiative ProgramAs part of the Lions-Measles Initiative pilot program, Lions are helping vaccinate 41 million children against measles, a leading cause of childhood blindness. LCIF Chairperson Eberhard Wirfs recently traveled to Madagascar with staff from international headquarters to help vaccinate at-risk children. In seven days, our effort reached 2.6 million people in Madagascar alone. Overall, we hope to reach at least 95 percent of children ages 9 to 47 months in Ethiopia, Mali, Madagascar and Nigeria by early 2011. Read our blog for a behind-the-scenes look at this program.

Do the Write Thing

The Lions International Essay Contest offers you a wonderful opportunity to support local visually impaired youth. And to promote your club by working with local schools and families to identify young people who are interested in participating. The contest is open to visually-impaired students, ages 11-13. One grand prize winner will receive an award and US$5,000. The theme for the essay is “Power of Peace.” Each essay must be submitted in English with a completed entry form, be no longer than 500 words, type written in black ink and double-spaced. Download complete rules and entry form.

Peace Poster Contest Theme Announced

Peace Poster ContestFor more than 20 years, the Lions International Peace Poster Contest has given young people a chance to express their visions of peace. And now, we’re excited to announce the theme for our 2011-2012 Contest – "Children Know Peace." If your club would like to sponsor a contest in a local school or youth group, Peace Poster Contest Kits will go on sale on January 15, 2011 from Club Supplies. Learn more about the 2011-2012 Peace Poster Contest, including how to order a kit.

New and Improved Service Activity Report

We’ve recently redesigned the Lions Club Service Activity Report to provide clubs with more tools to monitor their service activities and share information with others. The new system allows club and district officers to designate signature activities and set service goals that can be tracked throughout the year. Officers can also search activities that other clubs choose to share using key words, geographic location, program area and other criteria. Learn more about the report and upcoming informational Webcasts.
