Lions Day with the United Nations

On March 16, 2012 more than 400 Lions from 23 countries gathered at the UN Headquarters in New York to celebrate the 34th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations (LDUN). The event has been an important opportunity for Lions, UN leaders, and key partners to come together each year to assess the various challenges facing our global community and help us strengthen our commitment to serve those in need.

2012 Event Highlights 

The 2012 program focused primarily on our joint efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), particularly as they relate to childhood survival (MDG 4) and environmental sustainability (MDG 7). 

The following are a few highlights from the 2012 event:

• Robert Orr, Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Planning and Policy Coordination, provided welcome remarks emphasizing the importance of Lions’ involvement in the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals.  
• President Tam presented the keynote address that underscored the success and importance of the long-standing partnership between Lions and the UN. It was followed by a special announcement of a new partnership between Lions and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
• The afternoon session included presentations on key global initiatives followed by a panel discussion on how civil society organizations such as Lions Clubs International can contribute to the international development agenda.  
• The speaker panel included Andrea Gay of the UN Foundation, Richard Morgan of the UN Children’s Fund, and Juanita Castaño of the UN Environmental Programme.  
• A special musical performance by a youth violinist group and the announcement of the grand prize winners of the Lions International Peace Poster and Blind Essay Contests were also part of the program.
