Throughout the year you have many opportunities to participate in local or worldwide events to provide further community awareness and outreach.

Diabetes Screening

Partner with local health care providers to provide screenings at health fairs, places of worship, community centers and other locations.

Your Strides Event

You can sponsor a Strides event any time of the year or during any of the special days or months designated for awareness of diabetes and diabetic eye disease (retinopathy).

Diabetes Recreational Camps

Camps offer an array of service opportunities for Lions who want to support children and adults living with diabetes. You may want to serve on a camp committee or get involved with hands-on projects.  Access the LCI webinar, “How to Get Involved in Your Local Diabetes Camp.” Contact your nearest camp to find out how you can help. World Diabetes Day: November 14

The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations.  It is a popular event for Lions and it engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. The theme for 2014-2014 is “Healthy Living and Diabetes".

Diabetes Awareness Month: November

Each year during November, Lions worldwide join together to promote awareness of diabetes. This month helps to keep Lions and their fight against diabetes firmly in the public spotlight.

Projects and activities can include:

Access the 25 Project ideas for Diabetes Awareness and Action for additional ways to participate.  Use PR tools to help you publicize your project.

Diabetes Alert Day: USA

Diabetes Alert Day, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, is held every fourth Tuesday in March.  It is a one-day "wake-up call" asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.You can distribute the risk test to family, friends or fellow Lions, or choose another diabetes service project to commemorate this day.

Sharing the Vision Campaign

During this campaign, we invite Lions to continue their sight-saving work and provide assistance to those who are blind or have low vision.  Access campaign resources to plan a successful project in your club or district.  Learn about the importance of the dilated eye exam to detect diabetic retinopathy.

Lions World Sight Day:  October

Each year in October, Lions celebrate World Sight Day to focus attention on eliminating preventable blindness and improving sight.  This is an ideal opportunity for your club to focus on the prevention of diabetic eye disease (retinopathy).  Order your copy of the DVD, “Diabetic Retinopathy” for a Lions or community presentation.
