An ecosystem is a network of plants, animals and people, microorganisms and their nonliving environment. The well-being of people is closely related to the health of ecosystems, as we rely on them for a variety of resources and services, such as timber, food and water, and climate regulation. Because of the interdependence of all the elements in an ecosystem, management is important to protect all of its components.
