Organizing a Leo Club
Promoting Leo Clubs
Seminars for Leos
Leo Chairperson Responsibilities

District Leo chairpersons often organize leadership seminars or workshops for Leo officers or Leo advisors. Featured below is a suggested format.

1.  Schedule several seminars or workshops throughout the year. During the first meeting, Leo leaders will have an opportunity to meet. Encourage them to maintain this contact. Suggest the creation of an idea exchange among clubs in the district. Explain that district and international resources are available to Leo leaders. This includes seminars or workshops held in conjunction with district conventions or conferences.

2. Select a workshop topic which reflects the status and needs of Leo clubs in the district. Possible "how to" topics include:

  • encouraging the organization of new Leo clubs
  • nurturing new Leo clubs
  • helping Leos grow in leadership and learn from their experiences
  • helping Leos develop a personal commitment to ethical standards
  • selecting and implementing appropriate service projects

3. Workshop presenters may be:

  • Leos who can share their personal experiences
  • advisors who can explain how to start a new Leo club
  • a panel of advisors, Leos, or both
  • district chairpersons from other Lions program areas, e.g., youth outreach, who can provide service project suggestions

4. Publicize and promote the workshop. Send personal invitations to Leo club advisors or Leo club officers explaining the advantages of attending the workshop. Personally contact anyone who fails to reply.

5. Invite the district governor and all Lions club presidents. Also invite Lions from clubs that do not sponsor a Leo club. This will provide an opportunity for them to learn more about the Leo Club Program.

6. Obtain workshop materials from the Youth Programs Department at international headquarters or from the Resources section.

7. Use various formats throughout the workshop including:

  • motivational speeches
  • lectures followed by question-and-answer periods
  • visual presentations from a computer, a video, or photographic slides
  • small group discussions with ample time for the sharing of ideas

8. Request input from workshop participants. Their suggestions can help improve the next workshop.
