What is a Cataract? A cloudy or opaque area in the lens of the eye is known as a cataract. This causes impaired vision.
How do Cataracts Form?
A change in the chemical composition of the lens causes cataracts to form. It is not known why this change occurs.
What are the Symptoms of a Cataract?
- hazy, fuzzy, or blurred vision
- a change in an eyeglass prescription
- the feeling of a thin film over the eyes
- a change in the color of the eye's pupil from black to gray, yellow, or white
- poor night vision
- colors that seem to fade
- light that appears especially bright.
Can Cataracts be Removed?
Yes. Surgeons can remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a substitute lens. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, or an intraocular lens implant then serves as a replacement lens.
Can Cataracts be Prevented?
No. Persons over age 60 are advised to visit an eye care professional every two years for early detection of cataracts.
