What is a Cataract? A cloudy or opaque area in the lens of the eye is known as a cataract. This causes impaired vision. How do Cataracts Form? A change in the chemical composition of the lens causes cataracts to form. It is not known why this change occurs. What are the Symptoms of a Cataract?
Can Cataracts be Removed? Yes. Surgeons can remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a substitute lens. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, or an intraocular lens implant then serves as a replacement lens. Can Cataracts be Prevented? No. Persons over age 60 are advised to visit an eye care professional every two years for early detection of cataracts.
