Introduction

More than ever before in our increasingly complex world, youth is in need of considerate guidance, rather than dominating control; constructive support in the quest for new approaches to society's problems, rather than destructive criticism; and opportunities for personal and group development, rather than restrictions on individual and group endeavors. The vast energies and high ideals of youth throughout the world present a unique challenge to every adult to channel youth's energies and enthusiasm along those paths that awaken potential, encouraging the world's youth.

The International Association of Lions Clubs, recognizing youth as this world's greatest asset and hope for the future, believes that it is the humanitarian responsibility of individual Lions and Lions clubs throughout the world:

  • to view youth in relation to the Lion objective "to take an active interested in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community;"

  • to make communities aware of the obligation they have to youth;

  • to help provide the means which will enable the youth of the world to recognize and develop their potentialities.

Lions shall, in short, strive to make a community aware of its obligations to youth, find out what the needs of youth are, and help to fill those needs

Needs of Youth

Lions service to youth shall be concerned with the growth and development of the individual, recognizing the needs of youth in the following areas:

physical health, mental and emotional health, intellectual development, high ethical standards, educational opportunities, vocational preparation.

Through dialog and situation analysis, the needs of youth can be ascertained and subsequent action determined.

Youth as Individuals

Lions, in their service to youth, shall conscientiously strive to encourage the following:

  • respect for oneself;

  • respect for the value and rights of every individual;

  • acceptance of responsibility for one's own actions;

  • fostering an attitude of helpful service in the home, school, and community;

  • recognition that every type of vocation provides an opportunity for service to one's fellow man;

  • development of a spirit of international understanding and cooperation, based on knowledge of local and world affairs and implemented by international friendship contacts.

Lionism encourages not only Lion contacts with youth, but also youth contacts between themselves, despite separation by distance.

Youth Working Collectively

Always cognizant of the difference in individuals and cultures, Lions believed that there are certain fundamental relationships and ways of offering assistance that are universally acceptable. If the youth of the world are made aware of the local and global interdependence of all humans and each individual's responsibility to work for the common good, they will come to understand the meaning of the motto "We Serve," and therefore be encouraged to work to improve the condition of mankind. Lions can provide not only the means for individual fulfillment, but also an example of how individuals, through cooperation, can employ the powers of organization to more effectively act to help meet needs and to advance international understanding.

Conclusion

BE IT RESOLVED that Lions Clubs International, sensitive to the needs and desires of youth, determined through dialog and analysis, shall support, help or assist, design and sponsor youth programs and activities to help meet both existing and future needs and, thereby, provide for the future of mankind.
