Guiding Lion and Certified Guiding Lion

The District Governor is encouraged to appoint two Guiding Lions for each new club that is chartered.  These knowledgeable Lions assist the new club through its first years of operation. Certified Guiding Lions are Lions who have taken the Certified Guiding Lion Training. These Lions qualify for the Certified Guiding Lion Award after serving a new club successfully for two years. The Guiding Lion Award recognizes Lions who are not certified after the Lion serves the new club for one year and submits the Guiding Lion Evaluation of New Club form.

The Certified Guiding Lion program has proven to be an effective tool for new club development. The course, which is available to any active Lion member, may be taken individually at one's own pace or as a course given by a facilitator. After completion of the course, the Lion should meet with his or her District Governor, who will go over the Certified Guiding Lion Course Review, a booklet completed by the Lion. After the District Governor has signed the Review, the Review should be forwarded to the New Clubs and Marketing Department. Upon receiving the completed Review, the New Clubs and Marketing Department will mail the Lion a special certificate noting the Lion's achievement as a Certified Guiding Lion.

The comprehensive course provides insight of the skills needed to be a successful Guiding Lion and acquaints the participant with detailed knowledge of new club management, the roles and responsibilities of new club officers, how to create a membership recruiting plan, and "Making It Happen," Guide to Club Project Development. The course material includes a suggested timeframe that outlines activities that the club should achieve over the club's first two years.

A Certified Guiding Lion Instructor Guide and Power Point Presentation for group instruction are available for downloading. The Instructor Guide helps the course facilitator organize his or her presentation, and the Power Point Presentation may also be printed onto transparencies. Each Lion participating in the group instruction course should have a Certified Guiding Lion Kit. The Instructor Guide and Power Point Presentation are also available on CD ROM, free of charge to any Lion, by contacting the New Clubs and Marketing Department by e-mail.
