Dist. 2-TI, USA

"Trees for Tomorrow"

District Lions are encouraged to select a site (park, school or public building/land) and plant trees.  They also educate school children about the importance of planting trees and recycling through distribution of a colorful comic book compiled by national forestry organizations.

Recycling Center

The West Whittier, CA, Lions operated a recycling center and raised $18,000 in one year.

Dist. 13-G, USA

Educational Guidebooks

The Cadiz, OH, USA Lions Club provides environment guides for every fifth grade student and teacher in the county.  The "Better Environment" educational guidebooks are distributed in conjunction with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, and the Harrison Soil and Water Conservation District.  The club also sponsored field trips to farms, lakes and reforestation centers.

Arbor Day Contest

The West Windsor Township, NJ, Lions Club sponsored a poem contest for national Arbor Day, a day reserved for the planting of trees.  The grand prize was a tree.

Dist. 17-SW, USA

Recycling Center

The Lions of Stafford, KS, USA (population 2,000) organized a recycling center for the processing of 5000 lbs. of garbage every two weeks.

With the aid of the city commissioners, the city engineer and other interested parties, the Lions arranged with a local waste disposal company to pick up aluminum, plastic, newspaper and glass.  An empty building became the recycling center.  The unmanned facility is opened and closed daily by the local police.

Envirothon High School Competition

The Washington State Conservation Commission participates in the national Envirothon contest which challenges high school students to address environment questions.  The Lions encourage support of this program, which forces students to answer problem-solving questions concerning the water, soil, forestry and wildlife.

MD 20, USA

Environmental Clean Up Day

Every year, the Lions of New York state gather on April 24 to clean a roadside, park or other public area.  Local Scouts and youth groups join the Lions.  Trees are also planted on this annual occasion.

Memorial Forest

Oregon Lions employed the aid of Lion Frank Lockyear in creating a Vietnam Memorial Forest.  Their "Say Yes to Trees" project began on April 11, 1992.  Their goal is to plant 60,000 trees, one memorializing every fallen American in Vietnam.

Solar Energy For a Recycling Center

The Eugene Bethel, OR, Lions Club developed an experimental solar unit to use as an energy source for their 10 year old community recycling center.

Tree Planting

The Lions of Nebraska City, NE, actively promote tree plantings.  Their suggestion for an International Arbor Day for Lions encourages clubs to plant a tree in honor of every club member.

Hawaiian Island Clean-Up Campaign

The Kihei Lions Club annually supports the clean up, forestation and preservation efforts on their island.

Noise Pollution

Canadian clubs compiled statistical data on the effects of noise pollution.  This 22 page report serves as the prototype for clubs in other countries interested in combating the problem of noise pollution.

Compost Kit

The Lions Club of Wellington and District, ONT., sold compost kits as a fundraiser.  The kit taught the basics of backyard composting to the average homeowner.

Suggesting Improvements

The district suggested the local government institute strict control of the area's air, land and water.  The Lions suggested emission control of car, truck and industrial air pollution.  They also suggested tightened control over landfill usage.  In addition, they suggested a new sewage system that will eliminate contamination of the general drainage system while effectively recycling water.

International Reforestation Cooperation

The Punte del Este and the Montevideo Pocitos Lions Clubs created a local Joint Commission of Agriculture.  For the past decade, they have promoted the planting of 50 million trees.  This reforestation effort grew from the club to the district level.  Even the district governors of Georgia and Florida (USA) donated pine seeds compatible with growing conditions in Uruguay.

Educational Literature Distribution

During the United Nations' Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, the Lions distributed scientific literature on the ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, polluting agents and acid rain.

Save Antarctica

A "Save the Antarctica Ecosystem" video was created.  This educational awareness film was made available for public viewing.

The Natural Step

This program promotes nature over industrial destruction of the planet.  Lions in both the countries of Sweden and the Netherlands are involved in the Natural Step.

Multi-Faceted Program

Many service projects from this district addressed different aspects of the environment.  Included were: a recycling program, a tree planting program, the clearing of a nature trail, and preservation of a species of wild birds of prey.  Lions also removed the damaging effects of air pollution from religious and cultural monuments.  They also held district seminars on improving the environment.

Electric Car

Michel Baury, Chairman of the National Committee on the Environment and a Lion, invested 1986 to 1991 to the invention of an electric traction vehicle to combat air pollution.  He worked with the City of Paris, the UNEP, the Committee for the European Year of the Environment, the Delegation for the Quality of Life, the Ministry of the Environment, the Agency for the Quality of Our Air, and the Electricite de France in completing his dream car.

In 1987, Baury arranged a straight line race for electric traction at Paris' Auteil Hippodrome.  In 1990, he raced his car in the International Formula E Grand Prix of Touquet and a year later, entered the car in the Vincennes Grand Prix.

Green Prize

The Narbonne Aude Lions Club of France received the nation"s first "Green Prize" for the creation of the A.N.P.I.F., the Narbonnaise Assn. For the Prevention of Forest Fires.  The educational group began with six members, three of whom were Lions.  The award was presented in 1988 at the National Convention in Cannes.

Trees for Africa

Lions in MD 105, in concert with the Europa Forum, financed the planting of trees in Africa through twinned clubs.  European Lions financed the trees.  In exchange, African Lions provided progress updates and verified the planting.

Environment Poster

The district created an educational environment poster and then distributed it to local schools and public places throughout the district.  In addition, the district promoted saving nature by projects such as collecting and disposing of 150 dilapidated automobiles.

MD 108, ITALY

International Court for the Environmental Safeguard of the Mediterranean Sea

The Lions Districts of Italy created this international court to preserve their shared water source, the Mediterranean Sea.  The 18 countries which border the Mediterranean are all members of the Convention of Barcelona.

This international court maintains a seat in Rome.  It pronounces decisions on violations compromising the equilibrium of the environment or those living in the area.  Sentences, arbitrations and declarations according to international rules will be served to individuals, organizations public institutions and countries responsible for damage to the Mediterranean.

Preserve a Natural Spring

In 1990, regional authorities in the county of Reggio Emilia decided to suppress a natural spring.  The spring served agricultural purposes in addition to providing an ecosystem for specific flora and fauna.  Intervention by the Lions saved this natural water source.

Purifying the Seas

The Agrigento Lions Club created a plan to save the Mediterranean Sea in accordance with the United Nations' Blue Plan.  The club sponsors lectures and holds informational programs on safeguarding the Mediterranean from pollution.  Fund raisers are held to support this environment program.

Ecosystem Preservation

Lions aided the reconstruction of a river ecosystem by altering the path of a local river.  They will also assist in the restoration of both the river and an accompanying bird sanctuary.

Reusable Beverage Cups

At a Christmas fair, the Bad Wimpfen Lions Club initiated a new concept: selling beverages in reusable cups.  The novel achievement earned the club an environment certificate from the mayor.

Plant a Forest

Lions borrowed a successful tree planting theme from the country of Israel.  Lion Philip Artikopoulos stated, "It has become second nature to Jews all over the world, that they have to plant trees in Israel on every opportunity."  Births, deaths, weddings, anniversaries, good fortune in business or any other memorable occasion in life warrants the planting of a living memorial in Israel.

The Greek Lions implemented this philosophy and began planting trees.  On one Saturday morning, they planted 800.  Their total reforestation effort equaled 4,000 trees.  Each donor received a photo of the tree with an identifying label affixed and a certificate of ownership.

Greening of Australia

Replacing lost trees through the Greening of Australia project earned the district the 1988 Greening Australia National Award.  This educational, community project aims to plant one million trees.

The Lions selected a central nursery capable of producing 40,000 seedlings annually.  A network of local schools provided shadehouses for the nurturing seedlings.  When the seedlings were sufficiently grown, they were returned to the central nursery which sold the seedling to the public for a minimal fee.

Lions World Trees for Peace Project

The Lions Club of Inala, Queensland, established a Lions World Trees for Peace Environmental Reserve in Kevin Hooper Park, Inala, Brisbane.  Their goal is to plant a tree representing every Lions nation. One hundred fifty seven suitable trees have been identified for planting on Australian soil.  A commemorative wall was constructed adjacent to the trees, listing the names of participating Lions districts.

Promoting Improved Disposal

Many restaurants, schools and homes dispose of cooking grease directly into waterways.  Accumulated grease hardens in the outbound pipes and either blocks water flow or causes grease overflow into the public drainage system.  According to Dist. 310-B, this is a major cause of water pollution in developing countries.

To solve this common problem, the district devised a simple method for trapping grease.  The system collects grease in a bin.  Later, the grease is either buried under trees as fertilizer or kept in the sun to dry and become charcoal.

Save the Himalayas

A bicycle rally created awareness of the environmental crisis facing the Himalaya Mountains and the Ganges River.

Noxious Weed Eradication

The Miraj Lions Club organized a community project to collect and destroy Parthenium Grass (Gajar Gawat).  The weed posed a health threat to the community.  The club paid workers to remove the grass.

Environmental Awareness Festival

The Lions Club of Hyderabad Central conducted a multi-faceted environment festival.  A quiz competition was featured for high school students, a painting/drawing competition for grade schoolers and a photo competition for high school students.  A super idea contest (creating a means for improving the environment) was open to all students under age 18.  A film festival dealing with environmental issues and an art exhibit were also sponsored.

Student Memorial Forest

The Lions Club of Snehapuri donated trees for a school's planting project.  Each student was responsible for watering his/her own tree.  Name plates affixed to the sapling identified each tree.

Forestry Training

The Lions sponsored a five day forestry training program for 30 persons.  They also sponsored a nature camp for 60 youths.  Both were organized in conjunction with local forestry authorities.

Tree Planting Project

The Kathmandu, Nepal, Lions Club enlisted students to help with a tree planting project.  This event was held in conjunction with a Peace Poster Contest, which drew 34 students from 17 schools.

MD 330, JAPAN

Helping Others Appreciate Nature

Each year, the Hirosaki Tsugaru Lions (Dist 332-A) escort physically challenged children to view statues of famous people.  These statues are unique because they are made from chrysanthemums, a popular autumn flower.

The Aoi Lions (Dist 330-A) escort visually impaired residents of a home for the elderly through their "fragrant walkway" of trees and bushes.   Construction plans are available for interested Lions clubs.

River Clean Up

The Utosonomiya Lions Club cleaned a local river and then stocked it with fish.

Lions and Scouts Clean Up

The Nagoya Nakamura Lions were joined by Boy Scouts and their families in an annual World Lions Service Day Community Clean Up Project.

Cemetery Clean-Up

Members of the Akashi Futami Lions Club sponsor three cemetery clean up projects per year.  They eliminate weeds and litter.  This project demonstrates Lions' commitment to service.

Ragweed Elimination

The Yamaguchi Lions Club conducted an intensive public awareness campaign to eliminate the highly allergic ragweed plant. (Elimination is possible only by pulling out the entire plant.  Mowing or cutting the plant only spreads ragweed pollen.)

Dist 411, TANZANIA

Potable Water

Local Lions clubs donated a safe drinking water system to the town of Morogoro.  Over 1,000 residents will benefit from this service.

Dist 412, ZIMBABWE

Save the Rhino Project

The Lions Club of Umfuli dedicated a fundraiser to save the black rhinoceros.  Contributions from the successful benefit ball totaled US$70,000.  The club intends to continue its efforts to save endangered local wildlife.
