Lions often support recreational camps for people with diabetes. Sometimes, Lions arrange these camps. In other instances, Lions volunteer their time or provide funding for camps that are organized by other groups.

Recreational camps for people with diabetes require:

  • special emphasis on diet;
  • plenty of exercise time;
  • healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, dieticians, social workers) at the camp location.

Attending camp enables people with diabetes to meet others and share physical as well as emotional experiences.

For the past 12 years, the Lions of District 101-SM (Sweden) have organized a camp for teenagers who have diabetes. Downhill skiing is one of the featured activities during the camp. The teens learn the importance of adjusting their food intake and their insulin when participating in rigorous exercise.

Lions interested in arranging a recreational camp for youth or adults with diabetes can contact Lion Hans Folkesson for advice at: ab.saljsamverkan@telia.com
