Lions clubs, districts and/or district governors agree to refer patients to medical facilities for courtesy medical care upon conditions that the following procedures are fulfilled:

That no individual who can obtain comparable medical care within his own country or geographical area shall be proposed as a candidate for this program.

That the following information shall be provided in writing by the liaison or the family of the proposed patient to the sponsoring club or district and the medical facility in question prior to acceptance of any proposed patient:

  • Patient's name, complete address, telephone number and permission document if the patient is a minor.
  • Name, address and telephone number of the individual, group or organization assuming financial responsibility for hospital costs for the proposed patient as well as housing and meals for any relatives or individuals accompanying the proposed patients, and any other incidental expenses of the patient, relatives or accompanying individuals.
  • Name, address and telephone number of the individual, group or organization assuming financial responsibility for round trip transportation to the hospital for the patient, relatives and/or accompanying individuals.
  • History of the medical condition of the patient from a referring physician.

That no person should travel to the medical facility without prior official acceptance as a patient by that facility.

That no individual will be accepted as a patient unless evidence of the ability to pay the hospital and attendance costs is clearly determined prior to admittance and that the sponsoring Lions club or district be notified of each patient accepted.

That there shall be no costs for the surgery itself, such surgery to be donated by the performing surgeon(s).

That any hospital costs be paid in advance before surgery is performed unless agreed in writing otherwise by the sponsoring Lions club or district and the cooperating medical facility.

That neither Lions Clubs International, nor its offices or agent or employees, nor any Lion, or any individual who has not agreed to assume financial responsibility, shall be billed - or held responsible - for any portion of the costs attendant upon or incidental to medical treatment provided.

That neither Lions Clubs International, nor its officers or agents or employees, nor any Lion, or any individual acting in the name of Lionism shall be held liable in the event that any malpractice or other cause of action or claim arises out of or results from the medical treatment provided.

That the medical facility and its medical staff are not obligated to take as a patient any individual whose medical history is not conducive to the kind of surgery offered through this program.

That the Lions of the surrounding area shall not be looked to or expected to provide automatic housing and financial support unless they have agreed in writing to such procedures prior to the acceptance of a patient at the cooperating medical facility.

That the patient and any family members traveling with a patient be required to purchase round trip tickets.  These tickets may be open-ended, but proof of purchase should be provided prior to confirmation of a date of surgery.

That in the case of the demise of the patient, the disposition of the body will be the responsibility of the patient's family.

That the cooperating medical facility agree to limit hospital costs for each calendar year to a specified amount, if the hospital is not willing to waive the entire fee.  If, because of extenuating circumstances, costs will exceed the designated amount, the patient and the party assuming responsibility for hospital costs must be informed of that fact before making plans for admittance.
