Running Towards Recognition
In order for your Lions club to gain recognition, it must be visible to your community. One way to be visible is to participate in various local events. Prime opportunities include fundraising activities. The Dahlgren Lions Club (Virginia, USA) participated in the first ever King George County Relay for Life last year. This year they decided to participate again in the effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Dahlgren Lions Club president Robert Needy noted that their community has a "strong commitment to service" and that their club "recognizes the need to be a visible participant in community events like the [American Cancer Society's] Relay for Life."
"Raising money for the American Cancer Society is a great cause," said Club President Needy. "A number of our members are cancer survivors and, sadly, some [members] have not survived."
Participating in fundraising events shows people in the community that your club is active and willing to serve. It is also an opportunity to meet people in your area who are interested in service and may be welcome additions to your club.
Events such as these are often advertised in local papers ahead of time or on community bulletin boards. Also look to members in your club for other event ideas and to discuss interest in participating in these events.
