LIONS CLIMB WORLD’S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN

Oak Brook, IL, (USA), May 16, 2007, 9:15 a.m. – After a dangerous journey to the summit of the world’s tallest mountain, members of the Dingla Bhojpur Lions Club of Nepal hoisted the Lions Clubs International flag on top of Mt. Everest’s highest peak (29,029 feet) in Kala Patthar, Nepal. This Herculean task undertaken by Lions members Sonam Sherpa and Lakpa Gelje Sherpa was reported live by Nepal Television and broadcast in 52 countries worldwide.

The Dingla Bhojpur Lions Club carefully planned and conducted this Mt. Everest expedition in order to bring attention to the important services provided by the members of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization.

“This exciting expedition symbolizes the new heights Lions are reaching to serve those in need in their communities and around the world,” said Jimmy M. Ross, international president of Lions Clubs International. “These Lions exemplify what we can accomplish when we work together.”

Often recognized for their efforts in preserving and restoring vision, Lions are also very active in protecting the environment, mentoring youth, and much more. As volunteers, Lions decide on their own projects, meeting local needs in many unique and fun ways. Lions clubs offer a variety of service opportunities to match their wide range of interests, skills and leadership abilities. In addition to offering opportunities to help others, Lions clubs also provide a venue to meet new friends and learn valuable leadership skills.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world.
