With the help of a little magic from Simon Ma Magic, outgoing president Clement Kusiak appeared mysteriously out of thin air to kick off the second Academy Awards presented by Lions Clubs International.
The Shelby Township Lions Club in Michigan was excited upon winning the award for Club of the Year in the United States of America, its Affiliates, Bermuda & and the Bahamas. “This award is a special symbol that validates our club's efforts of serving the less fortunate over the past 47 years,” said Club President Patrick Bosheers.
Saerhan Sencayir waited nervously to see if his club from Bursa, Turkey would win Club of the Year in Europe and if Bursa Leos would win for Outstanding Leo Service Project. “My heart is beating so hard,” he said before the awards were announced, patting his chest. Soon he accepted awards for both his club and the Leo clubs. And Quing-Feng Chen, from the China Shenzhen Xiang Mi Hu Lions Club, ran triumphantly down the aisle with his arms in the air to accept the Academy Award for Lion of the Year.
The stars of Lions Clubs International assembled on Wednesday, June 29 for the formal award ceremony, held during the 88th International Convention in Hong Kong, which showcased the three finalists in each category. Emcees Past International President Judge Brian Stevenson and Lion Jacqui Nathan, wife of PID Phil Nathan, announced the winner in each category during the night’s program. It was a gala evening, held in the beautifully decorated Grand Hall ballroom overlooking Hong Kong’s busy harbor, that featured delicious food, outstanding entertainment by the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe and the Sparkle Band and good fellowship with more than 1,000 Lions from around the world.
