For those in Gujarat, a state in India, January 26, 2001, was the day the world changed irrevocably. A mammoth earthquake struck as people were caught in their morning routines. The toll was stunning: 20,000 dead and 167,000 injured, one million homes destroyed or damaged, 15 million people touched by a loss of family or home.

LCIF collected US$1.4 million in donations from around the world to help Gujarat. In addition LCIF gave a US$500,000 major catastrophe grant and three US$10,000 emergency grants for immediate assistance. LCIF rebuilt 750 homes and 20 schools and partnered with a steel company to build a Lions general hospital.
